The Quest for Sustainability - Profile on Asian Improved Cookstove Programs

The last few decades have witnessed the dramatic change in the direction of improved cookstove programs, particularly in the alternative approach toward greater users' participation and the emphasis on non (non direct) subsidy approach. At the same time there has been a lack of documentation that reflect on these alternative approach used by recent and existing programs.

Aware of the importance of such documentation toward the needs to inform and provide insight into alternative improved cooksove program approaches, ARECOP is facilitating a survey focussing on the approach carried out by existing ICS programs. The information collected will include the following but not limited to : user education/awareness raising campaigns, skills and training needs of extension workers/stove producers, degree to which users have had a choice in determining stove design, whether or not the ICP has been integrated in the context of complementary benefits of other programs, post installation/purchase follow-up, adoption rates and dissemination methods used like commercialization, etc.

The information will be compiled and made available to the network members in the form of a comprehensive publication. This will enable them. as well as other organizations and donor agencies to have a better insight in the structure of ICP's and ICS dissemination strategies used elsewhere and may assist them in devising more effective systems and strategies within their own programs.
