Indonesia ICS Network Regional Training on Improved Cookstove Technical and Programmatic Skills

An important issue arising from the Indonesia ICS National Network meeting held late last year, was the lack of technical skill in the different regions on the construction of improved cookstove. It was then recommended to organize technical training in the 5 regions in Indonesia (North Sumatera, South Sumatera, East Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan), which was followed up with four regional trainings:

·         At the end of 2005 one training was already done that was for the North Sumatera region

·       In South Sumatera the training was held from 13 -17 February 2006 in Palembang. The training was hosted by Heifer as the South sumatera focal point. 16 participants from 14 organizations attended the training.

·       For the Sulawesi region, the training was held from 27 – 31 March 2006. The training was held at Daseng Lolaro, Tiwoho, Manado. There were 24 participants from 24 different organizations, including both NGO’s and GO’s

·       The training for the  East Nusa Tenggar Region was held from  8 – 12 May 2006, attended by 24 participants from 9 different organizations.

In all of the regional training, participants were trained on how to design improved cookstove based on the design of local traditional stove and cooking practice. Once the stove was tested for its performance, then mould was made. The use of mould is to encourage for the dissemination of improved cookstove because it encourages faster dissemination of the ICS. During the training, the trainer also brought sample of mould that the participants would know how to produce the mould and as well how to use mould to make ICS. Though the training was focused on ICS technical aspect, some knowledge on kitchen improvement was also provided as it is considered that participants should also take into considerations kitchen improvement together with the introduction of improved cookstove. At the end of the training, participants were also required to draft strategic plans for dissemination of ICS and Kitchen Improvment.
